A record number of Americans, 50 million, are predicted by an AGA survey to wager $16 billion on Super Bowl LVII.
A staggering 50.4% of American adults, or 20% of the population, are predicted to place bets on the outcome of Super Bowl LVII, making it the most-watched sporting event in the country. With a 61 percent increase from the previous high established in 2022, this year's estimated wagers set a new betting record. Americans are expected to wager $16 billion on the 2023 AFC championship game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, which is an increase of 100% over predictions made only one year before.
Sport betting is becoming increasingly popular.
According to the AGA, for the first time in the history of regulated sports betting, the number of conventional Super Bowl wagers is likely to exceed casual betting. A total of 30 million American adults were found to be interested in placing traditional bets online, a 66% rise over the previous year, while a similar number (28 million) preferred casual wagers, an increase of 50% over 2022. These numbers demonstrate, without a doubt, the growing popularity of sports betting among adults in the United States.
Expansion of Licenced Activities:
The growth of legally sanctioned sports betting may be a contributing factor to the rising demand for the services and infrastructure provided by sports betting operators. More people will tune in to events like the February 12 primetime NFL game if sports betting is legalised. Over 35% of NFL fans said that having the option to bet with a legitimate operator adds a sense of safety and excitement to the NFL championship game.
"Every year, the Super Bowl serves to highlight the benefits of legal sports betting," said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. "Bettors are transitioning to the protections of the regulated market, leagues and sports media are seeing increased engagement, and legal operators are driving needed tax revenue to states."
Warning against irresponsible gambling:
Casinos in the United States are represented by AGA, a national trade organisation. It promotes honest and ethical business practises among its varied membership of commercial and tribal casino operators, sports betting businesses, and iGaming service providers. The casino business, spearheaded by AGA, is worth $261 billion and accounts for 1.8 million U.S. employment. Consistent efforts by the gaming industry in promoting responsible play have helped spread the message of social responsibility to a wide audience.
According to AGA, 71% of conventional Super Bowl gamblers were exposed to the responsible gaming message in 2017. More crucially, those under the age of 35 were found to be the most aware of the responsible gaming message and the most inclined to assert the necessity of only legal gambling. Between January 31st and February 1st, 2023, 2,199 individuals across the country participated in an online survey conducted by the AGA.
Constructing a secure and long-lasting market:
Miller added: "As interest in legal sports betting continues to expand, the gaming industry remains committed to responsibly delivering world-class entertainment, educating consumers about how to bet responsibly, and combating illegal gambling as we work to build a safe, competitive, and sustainable legal market for all."
On Sunday, Super Bowl LVII will feature the two long-standing rivals. The odds of each winning are the same, according to sports analysts. The betting public appears to have similar opinions, as nearly half (44%) want to gamble on both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
