In December, Pennsylvania sets yet another record for iGaming income.
In December, Pennsylvania sets yet another record for iGaming income.
For the second month in a row, Pennsylvania operators said that iGaming brought in high amounts of money. But in December, sports betting income went down because of results that were good for customers and had an effect on the whole business.
Pittsburgh, PA December: Pennsylvania's casinos brought in a total of $533.1 million (£463.5 million/€517.3 million) in December. This is 0.2% less than the same time last year and 5.2% less than the record $562.4 million set in November.
According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), igaming was the state's most popular type of gambling in December. The monthly income here reached $223.6 million, which was 35.5% more than in December 2023 and 11.5% more than the previous high point set in November.
Online slots brought in $164.3 million, which is 40.5% more than the same time last year. The money made from online card games also went up by 24.2%, and the money made from online poker went up by 2.9% to $2.5 million.
During December, people spent $4.28 billion on online slots and $3.01 billion on online table games. Spending on online poker wasn't made public.
In the world of online gambling, Hollywood Casino at Penn National is still the company to beat. More than $86.4 million was made that month, which is 41.8% more than in 2023.
Once again, Valley Forge Casino came in second with $61.3 million in iGaming income, which is 48.4% more than the previous year. It came in third with $35.2 million, which is 12.4% more than the second place finisher.
In Pennsylvania, sports betting goes down.
At $21.9 million, sports betting gross gaming income (GGR) was 69.9% less than the same time last year. This is also a long way from November's high $77.1 million, which means it's 71.6% less than that amount.
It's not a big surprise that this happened because other states, like New Jersey and New York, also saw drops in December. Because the results are more customer-friendly, players win more and managers lose money.
For the month, online betting brought in $21.6 million, while retail betting brought in $222,395.
Handle went over $893.4 million, which is 3.5% less than the same time last year and 4.5% less than November's record-high $935.5 million. People bet a total of $848.8 million online and $44.6 million at brick-and-mortar casinos.
This means that Pennsylvania had a state-wide hold of only 2.45% at the end of December.
Please do not stop the FanDuel train.
With Valley Forge Casino Resort as a partner, FanDuel is still the market leader when it comes to providers. In November, the business made $14.1 million on a handle of $353.3 million, which is a 3.99% hold.
Second place went to DraftKings and Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, which lost $7.3 million out of a $238.5 million handle. This means that they have a 3.06% monthly hold. They moved up to third place with $782,109 off of $45.5 million in bets, which is a hold of 1.72%.
Next came Parx Casino and Kambi with $606,330 from a handle of $17.3 million, which is a 3.50% hold. Next was Live Casino Philadelphia, which is also a FanDuel partner. They won $302,458 from $6.7 million in bets, which is a 4.49% hold.
But bad sports results had such an effect that BetMGM and its partner, Hollywood Casino Morgantown, which is usually one of the market leaders, lost $259,670 on bets worth $66.2 million.
What happened in other parts of Pennsylvania?
Along with other parts of the market, the land-based casino business also saw drops in December. The money made from physical slots dropped 2.7% to $202.1 million, and the money made from physical table games dropped 4.3% to $79.4 million.
In other news, the $3.4 million in income from video gaming terminals (VLTs) was 0.9% less than the same time last year. On the other hand, fantasy sports income rose 9.7% to $2.7 million.
When taxes are taken into account, this came to $223.7 million in December. At $102.2 million, retail slots brought in the most money. Table games came in second with $13.2 million. In-game betting brought in $97.2 million, sports betting $7.7 million, VLTs $1.8 million, and fantasy sports $404,660.
