Industry News 11 Jan 2022

Revenue from sports betting in Illinois sets a new benchmark in November.

The total handle of all Illinois sportsbooks, including brick-and-mortar and virtual, increased by 74% year over year in November, reaching over $779.8 million, and generating record revenues of $78.2 million.

The November total reportedly broke the Midwestern state's previous best of $49.9 million set in March and represented a growth of 112% when compared to the $37 million that was chalked up for the same month in 2020, as reported by the online gambling news domain at PlayIllinois.com on Monday. According to the same source, this was the case despite the fact that the month's total handle of $840.4 million did not break the record set the previous month due to the fact that there was one fewer full weekend of professional and collegiate football.

The common good:

All of this apparently led to a record-breaking $12.7 million in state and local taxes from sports betting in the state with a population of 12.8 million in November, which was 50.7% more than the $52.5 million total established the previous month. According to reports, however, Illinois' 30-day average daily sports betting volume dropped by little over 4% month-to-month, to over $26 million.

Important Figure:

As of March 2020, Illinois was the third most profitable sportsbetting market in the United States, behind only Nevada and New Jersey, where legal sports betting had previously been available solely in casinos. According to Eric Ramsey of PlayIllinois.com, this result played a major role in November's surge that saw the whole sports betting market in the United States bring in over $658.5 million in total revenues, an increase of roughly 48.4 percent month over month.

A statement from Ramsey was reportedly read out loud...

Illinois's rapid expansion stands out even in the most successful month for sports betting in the United States' history. Even though the industry has been limited by the prohibition on in-state college sports and in-person registration, sportsbooks in the state continue to report these outcomes. When you take off those restraints, you will find that the sky's the limit.

Top travel spots:

According to his research and that of Joe Boozell of PlayIllinois.com, New Jersey remained the most lucrative sportsbetting market in the United States in November, with a total handle of $1.3 billion generating around $114.8 million in revenue. He said that Nevada came in second with $62 million in earnings on $1.1 billion in wagers, while Pennsylvania came in fourth with $761.6 million in handling and $84.9 million in earnings.

It has been alleged that Boozell said...

Bettors in a relatively new market like Illinois are becoming used to and even seeking out non-traditional options like in-game wagering at sportsbooks. The sports betting industry is expected to experience meteoric growth in 2022 thanks to a confluence of factors, including a maturing market and new regulatory opportunities in the state.
